Bonjour,
désolée pour la longueur de mon message, je voudrais simplement un rapide avis sur mon travail s'il vous plait.
Merci d'avance pour votre aide !
I am going to talk about the notion of Space and Reciprocity. First, I will give a definition of this notion. An exchange is the act of giving or receiving something in substitution for something else. Exchanges can take several forms: economic thanks to work exchanges, exchange of goods, or cultural with movement of people as tourism or immigration. In class, we focused on the exchange which accompanies immigration, and more precisely the case of the immigration waves to America. Immigration always represents for population, which decides to left their own countries for different reasons as war, economic issues or else, the hope of a new life full of happiness. That's what the American Dream promised, a land of milk and honey. We could then ask if America is still as it claimed at the beginning, a land of welcoming where dreams come true? I will deal with that notion in a chronologically way. In a first time we are going to talk about the beginning of the immigration in America with the arrival of the Pilgrim's Fathers. Then, we'll see the reception given to the wave of immigration of the years. And last, we shall consider the actual situation of illegal immigration in America.
To begin, we are going to deal with the first wave of immigration to America. It takes place at the XVII th century, the immigrant populations was mainly from the Northern Europe, including English, Dutch and Germans populations. The first to sailed away to the New World were English settlers in November 1620. They decided to left their country for religious reasons. The first document I'm going to talk about is a painting entitled « The First Thanksgiving » by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris dated from the XIXth century. It deals with the first Europeans settlers in America, the Pilgrims Fathers. It celebrates the 1st Thanksgiving which has become one of the most important celebrations in the USA held on the last Thursday of November. In the first place, it was a big feast to thank God for the harvest, but also to thank the Indians who help the colonists to cultivate locals plants, otherwise they might have starved. We can see a woman in the center is serving the Natives sitting on the ground. A man is bringing food, colonists are sitting at the table, a dog waiting for left overs. In the background two women are walking side by side chatting amicably. It's almost as if they are hugging each other. The general atmosphere is relaxed, friendly. This is a moment of peace, sharing, exchange. However, the Indians and the colonists are not sitting together.
The men stay between themselves. In the background one of the men is carrying a rifle another, possibly a soldier carrying a sword. Relates a historical event we can see that there is a real sense of sharing going towards the other, indeed they share there meal, there food, but also there is an exchange of talk, of their cultures. Yet the prescence of armed men shows that the colonists are if not outwordly suspicious at the very least cautious. With hindsight we know that the indians were the victims of a genocide.
Then, we will approach the second big wave which takes place during the XIXth until the Xxe during the great famine and the two worlds wars in Europe. Immigrants arrived by thousands every day, there were Germans, Irish, Greeks and Italians. They were attracted by the American Dream and the Gold Rush which promised them fortune and glory. In the first half of the Xxe century, the American Government a special control at Ellis Island to regulate and register the mass of immigrant who arrived each day, it was an obligatory stop for everyone. The second document I'm going to deal with, is an extract from an autobiographical book written by Mark Helprin. It takes place in the processing center for immigrants in New-York, Ellis Island. It illustrates a typical exam there. The main character is a young man in his late 20s. He's a proud and learned man from eastern Europe, possibly Russia. He is a Jew. And because he could write and read books in many languages, he is very self-confident. The first part of his medical exam consisted in checking his lungs (because of the TB) and his eyes by a young man. Then, the second test check his physical capacities, this was important because requests of manual worker to develop the country was abundant. A « big fat man » asked him to bend over. For the narrator it seamed preposterous and he wanted to know why because this demand seemed to be humiliating. However, the big man didn't give an answer, he just made fun of the narrator that he found too daring. Moreover, the big man abused of his power on the narrator because he is American and so, thinks he has the power to do what he wanted with immigrants, and to decide who comes to an arbitrariness. Eventually the narrator obeyed and bent over. The second examination, which is the « legal examination » was carried by a woman. She fulfilled her job asking him questions, and because she is a « pretty woman » he replied with confidence and boasts about all the languages he could speak, in the aim of impress her, but the effect was the contrary got very suspicious. There is a deep misunderstanding between the narrator and the American customs officer. Eventually, she sent him to special Inquiry « S.I » so that he would be further interrogated by the FBI in order to determine if he is a danger for the country. The narrator thinks he is living a fairy tale. For him, he is touching the American Dream (money, success, luxury, love...) when in fact reality will be harsh. He will find a job, a place to live. Yet, we know that eventually the narrator, Mark, was allowed to the US and that he succeeded and lived the American Dream.
To finish with, we are going talk about the illegal immigration to America nowadays. It is estimated that there is about 12 million illegal immigrants on the territory. 52 % of them come from Mexico, they represent 38,8 million people or 11% of the overall population in U.S. That immigration is by the border common that the USA have with Mexico, one of the longest borders in the world 3,000 kilometers which follow the Rio Grande and crosses a variety of landscapes (deserts, rivers, mountains). The third document is an excerpt from a novel by James A. Michener entitled « Texas ». The text is a first person narrative. This text is about illegal immigration crossing the border to. There are 18 Mexicans or « wetbacks », and 2 American smugglers (one whose name was Hanson who drove the truck and led the operation, and another armed, who is in charge to watch the immigrants). The journey didn't start badly and soon they were on the American side. The Rio Grande was shallow so not difficult to cross. Finally, at the mercy of the two American smugglers, they are forced to give them more money, they had to be obedient. They got on the truck under the watch of the cohort. They must have felt threatened and anxious for what will happen next. In the second part, once in the desert, the smugglers faked a breakdown, got the Mexicans out and left them in the middle of the desert. The wetbacks found themselves lost with no food and no water. The Mexicans eventually died in horrible conditions of thirst and exhaustion. In that descent into hell, most of 18 Mexicans lost their lives. This text shows the cruel aspects of illegal immigration. The mexicans were lured into the possibility of getting to the other side safely, but were deceived. Their descent into hell is that of the end of the dream, and for some of them the end of a life. What's more, their death will probably go unnoticed. This frightful narrative raises the question of betrayal. All the promises of a better futur in the USA are broken by those who use yhe powerlessness of the illegal immigrants for their own benefit. This text that America is no longer a refuge or a land of hope for the immigrants.
To conclude, we see beyond a chronological reflexion, that America never really been a land of milk and honey as it pretended. In fact, for the Pilgrims America was promised land, and at the beginning they lived on good terms with the natives, in the painting we saw, the pilgrims and the Indians were in an exchange relation, they shared their customs, skills. But then, has been broken with the genocide and the acculturation of the Indian population. We saw next the immigration of the XXth century with the establishment of Ellis Island. People arrived by millions to reach the American dream, this wonderful place where they could build a new life, make a lot of money. But the dream wasn't for every one, America wanted especially workforce to develop industry and construct buildings. Moreover, at this time, the poverty in America was extremely high. We finished with the immigration nowadays, and we saw that America became even stricter regard to immigration, which leads a lot of illegal immigration.
On my mind, immigration is an asset, because this is an opportunity to mix different cultures, to have a more complete view of the plurality of humanity.
Yet, the future doesn't look very much lighter, in light of the new immigration policy, and with the waves of immigration ever-increasing.

Le mélange des temps est très dérangeant ... le temps de la narration est le simple past!
Sorry! I have to stop!
