Merci d'avance
Notion – Places and forms of power
I’m going to deal with the notion places and forms of power. First, I’d like to give a definition of the notion: “Places”could be important buildings or institutions that represent a certain form of power. A place can also be a country or a state. Power is the ability to exercise authority and influence over others, events or resources to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance or opposition. A person, a group, or a nation can have great influence over others. It can be exerted in different domains: economy, politic, media, culture. Of course, this can lead to conflict and tension between those who have power and those who don’t, when people disagree with some powers, but also when people take advantage of their power to the detriment of others. In relation to the notion, the topic of my presentation would be the conquest of America during the fifteenth century. To what extent can the colonization be considered as a form of power? First, we are going to see the conquest of territories by the settlers. Then, we will see how the settlers have imposed their own culture to the detriment of Indian’s culture.
First, the goal of the colonization was to take control of natives Americans’ lands. To achieve this purpose, the settlers organized many operations making the native leave their territories as the trail of tears. In fact, in 1830, President Jackson helped the Indian removal act to be passed through congress. The goal was to wipe Indians of from their land. Five eastern tribes had to abandon their farms. They were forced to leave under military control so they had to walk 2000 km westwards in “Indian territory”. At the end of this journey a lot of people died because of starvation and diseases: that’s why this was called the Trail of tears. Besides, the Indian appropriation act of 1851 also shows us the desire of the settlers to appropriate lands. This act was passed by the congress, creating the reservation system: the government forced Native American to move to reservations, an area of land where natives Americans are leaving together. Pine ridge, for example, is a famous reservation located in South Dakota. These operations show us well the conquest of territories by the settlers in North America.
After having taken their territories, the second step of the colonization is to transmit their culture to the natives making them banish their culture of origin.
To achieve this objective, they used for example boarding school. In fact, in 1869, the government decided to set up a policy whose goal was to educate Indians in the way of western society. In these schools, children were extremely badly treated: children were taken from their home and family, there was sexual abuse, they couldn’t speak their language by risk to having to wash their mouth with soap and they also had to wear uniforms and were obliged to dress like Europeans. To assimilate and Americanize them, brainwashing techniques were used. Up to the late 1960s, 100000 kids between 5 and 6 years old were forced to attend boarding schools. In addition, the settlers used an intellectual and cultural concept: Manifest Destiny to justify this objective, the belief that Americans were the “chosen people” who had the mission to bring democracy to Native Americans. This idea is illustrated in a painting entitled American Progress. We can see a woman who is an allegory of the Manifest Destiny, holding books which symbolize progress and civilization. Settlers are following her while Indigenous people are running away.
It shows us that the settlers obliged the natives to adopt their culture hiding the atrocities made on these peoples.
To conclude, colonization can be considered as a form of power because, thanks to the example of the Indians of America, we can see that settlers by appropriating their land and imposing them their culture, took the power on the natives Americans. Here, we can talk about abuse of power. I like to study this notion because it gives another point of view about colonization that I already know more realistic.
