Bonjour,
j'aimerai savoir si quelqu'un pourrait m'aider à corriger mes fautes de grammaire pour mon oral du Bac? Je vous en serais très reconnaissante...Merci pour vos réponses.
I’m going to deal with the theme “IMAGINATION AT WORK”. This could define a work of fiction, which deals with: imaginary world, unreal, fantasy, fairytales... The creation of imaginary world s enables the writer to expose truths of his own society without censorship.
We will see that, especially trough the genre of Utopia and Dystopia.
And, I’m going to wonder: In what extent can we say that there is only one step from Utopia to Dystopia?
First, in a Utopia by Thomas More in 1516,
Then, in a Dystopia by George Orwell in 1948,
Finally, in a movie realised by Peter Weir in 1998
I/ Utopia: “Utopia” (1516)
To begin with, the early 16th century marks the flowering of the Renaissance and humanism.
Sir Thomas More, an important artist of these movements began his own poetical thinking and philosophical dreaming in an England lock of security and social compassion; there was no tolerance account of the oppressive religion. During this period, More introduced a new literary genre with his work entitled “Utopia” in 1516.
His work of fiction describing an island where there is an ideal system of political and social perfection. Here, the passage deals especially with Utopia’s organisation.
It’s a pyramidal system where the elections are voting by the people for the people. Moreover, the mayor is elected for life. What More describes as an ideal republic is the absolute opposite of his time, in which the king had the absolute power. However, even if this society appeared perfect, we can ask ourselves: Is that the ideal society we want?
Indeed, we can have the impression that, here, there is a form of dictatorship as the leader is elected for life; there is no public places, no privacy and no property. Can we say that this society give real freedom from its citizens? It’s important to recall that the concept of Utopia can’t be separated of the concept of Dystopia.
II/ Dystopia: “1984” (1948)
Anyway, this concept appeared more later in 1868. Generally, it illustrates an imaginary place in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from oppression, deprivation, or terror.
So it’s not by chance if a lot of Dystopias have been written after the 2 World war.
In 20th century, George Orwell became one of the most popular writers of this genre with his dystopian novel entitled “1984” write in 1948. A work well representative of the modernism movement as it criticizes totalitarian regimes: Stalinism and Nazism.
In this dystopia, people are all the time manipulated and watched, they are spied-on and controlled. The story takes place in oceania dominated by Big brother, ruled by Ingsoe and controlled by the “Though Police”. This passage is at the very beginning of the novel. Here, the setting oscillates between the normal and the dismal. For example, L 37 to 38, the author uses the metaphor of winter to illustrate the cold atmosphere. In this passage, Big brother tries to have power on everything: on words, on sleep, on feelings. We can say that in a certain extent this Dystopia have common point with Utopia as they are both results of a political project. A project which tends to make possible an ideal: Ideal of equality in Utopia, and ideal of absolute power in 1984.
III/ Movie: Truman show (1998)
Finally, trough the movie “Truman show” out in 1998, we can see why there is just a little borderline between Utopia and Dystopia.
The title “TRUMAN SHOW” refers to the protagonist of the movie called Truman, but at the same time, this man is also the protagonist of a famous TV show without knowing.
Indeed, since his birth, he was stage in an ideal and perfect world, which was in fact a false reality made by Christof, the director of the TV show. So, we can say that, behind the scene is hiding a dystopian society unscrupulous.
This movie is a harsh criticism of the society at the emergence of 21th century. A society corrupted by Medias, and over consumption.
I have chosen this movie because I found:
On one hand, that it embodies aspects of the work Utopia by More and 1984 by Orwell, so, it makes tribute.
On the other hand, I found that it’s an ingenious movie as the stake in abyss illustrate that Christof utopia’s is Truman Dystopia’s.
CONCLUSION:
To conclude, we can say that societies describe in Utopias and Dystopias have the same characteristic: be perfect.
Here, these works have the same goal: remit in question the real statue of man in the world.
