Bonsoir,
j'ai un petit oral blanc demain après-midi et j'aimerais avoir de l'aide pour corriger mes erreurs s'il vous plait.
Merci d'avance.
I will talk about the notion « Imagination at work » and more precisely about witchcraft and magic. To illustrate this theme I choosen « The Crucible » wrote by Arthur Miller in 1953. This is a play about the Salem witch trials in 1692 in Massachusetts, which is an allegory of McCarthyism and the Communist hunt of the 50s.
So, I will try to answer this question : By what means authors can denounce something ?
This excerpt deals with Tituba's confession. She has just confessed she is guilty of practising witchcraft. Through devil's words tituba reveals the truth about Parris ( her minister) , what he is really : mean, devil, bully... Accusing parris, she subtly accuses other white citizens of doing the devil's work approving slavery.
Moreover, this song « burn the witch » by Queens of the Stone Age, asks if it is really the person persecuted who will go to hell.
The crowd condemn an innocent and call for blood, for pyre. She condemn without searching verity. And those who know must be silent, and even lie. I can link this song with the Red Scare's period. There is a fear atmosphere with paranoia, persecution and accusations are without proof.
So, to conclude I'm going to present this review which explain us Miller's intentions. It states that ''he wanted to let the world know the extreme numbers of people that were accusing each other of being Communist in 1950.'' Arthur miller's play draw indeed a parallel between the witch hunt in salem and mccarthyism.
Thanks to the implicit authors can denounce bads things and avoid censorship.
So, they show how people can use the witch hunt in order to get even with their enemies, to earn their life and how they sacrify the justice to protect their power.
