Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 quite by chance. Then, the first English settlers proclaimed the United States' independence in 1776 and the young republic grew rapidly thanks to the influx of European immigrants in the nineteenth century.
How has the immigration evolved in the United States since the nineteenth century?
In the early nineteenth century, immigrants were attracted to the United States because they could start afresh in this new republic thanks to the building of the railroad and the gold rush. Whenever new lands were discovered, a kind of race was organized and the new immigrants could get free lands.
At this time, all the immigrants fled their country from religious war, the potato famine, the poverty or the French revolution.
The main wave of immigration occurred between 1880 and 1925. The American authorities were fed up with those poor immigrants, so they set up in 1892 a kind of customs on Ellis Island, an island on the harbour of NY. They wanted strong healthy people to work on farms and to cross the country, they did not want any burden. American authorities wanted order and efficiency to conquer the west. Therefore, on this Island, poor immigrant had to undergo a series of tests, psychological tests and physical tests, to become American. It was a humiliating difficult time because a lot of families were parted and they had to choose between going west and coming back home, for free. That is the reason why Ellis Island was also called the Isle of Tears.
The new comers formed the melting pot. They had to become good Americans and forget about their roots. They were not supposed to speak English, they could learn it afterwards.
Between the two wars, immigration slowed down and American authorities decided to stop Ellis Island and turned it into a museum.
However, the immigration is still important. Americans tried to set quotas in vain so they installed the green card. On the west coast, there are lots of Asians and Hispanics immigrants. Those immigrants are all attracted by the American Dreams, and they formed the salad bowl. The Asians live all together; they do their own trade and have their own police. They stick to their customs and habits.
On the contrary the Hispanic are a threat because they work and study in the USA and when they graduated they come back to their country. They stick to their roots. Most of the Hispanics are undocumented and they crossed the borders illegally by every means. They can hide on coaches, on trains. Unluckily for them there is a desert, so they may sometimes die of thirst, heat, cold or they may be attacked or bitten by wild animals. Sometimes they used fake IDS or pay a smuggler (who can robbed of their money and left them alone). They try to cross a river, the Rio Grande, when it’s dry, but they are shot down by the boarder Patrols or they chowed because the stream is high. They can use the sewers, or try to find a breach in the wall, but they can be shot down by the boarder patrols or by American citizens.
Recently, the Americans found a more pacifist solution to deal with this illegal immigration. They created the maquiladoras, all along the boarder. There they employed unskilled workers to work on the chain, they are very lowed paid, but enough to live in their country.
In conclusion, the immigration have evolved a lot in the USA in the nineteenth century, first with Europeans immigrants who flee their country for different reasons, and then with Asian and Hispanic immigrants.
