Bac/Mythes et héros
Message de rumbachou16 posté le 03-04-2015 à 17:46:45 (S | E | F)
Bonjour !
je passe mon oral d'anglais bientôt et j'aurais vraiment besoin d'aide pour corriger ma notion s'il vous plait.xxx
Merci d'avance

I’m going to talk about «myths and heroes». First of all, I would like to give you a quick definition of this notion. A myth can be definied as an ancient story about gods, heroes and mystic creatures. It can be a popular belief, a tradition or a false notion. A hero is someone with noble qualities and great courage who is admired for his / her achievements. There are many types of heroes : mythological or legendary heroes, like superheroes, movie characters..., patriotic or national heroes such as sportsmen, human rights defenders, kings/queens, politiciens..., and modern heroes such as policemen, firemen or war heroes. These heroes represent most of the time models for the population. Then we have antiheroes, who represent what society detests but since they’re so deeply human we actually like them because we wonder if they can progress.
Now, in order to illustrate this notion, I will use two exemples, the first one is The Legend of Hercules, written by Ovide, and the second one, a press article from the National Geographic Channel that relate the firemen’s action during 9/11.
The most well known heroes are probably mythological heroes who come to us from ancient Greece. I would like to develop the exemple of the Legend of Hercules, who appears for the first time in the nineth book of the Metamorphoses, written by Ovide, a latin poet from the first century. Hercule represents the definition of hero well. Indeed, in the dictionnary the original meaning of hero is demigod, and Heracles is the son of Zeus. But he is also considered as an hero because of the works he has done, among wich he defeated various mystic creatures thanks to his intelligence, strength and courage.
These mythological heroes can be contrasted with the one’s of real life, the one’s who are here to accomplish their duties. On September 11th 2001, the New York city fire department has faced the largest rescue mission of its history. According to a press article from the National Geographic Channel, 343 firemen left their lives that day. Firefighters knew the fire was too important to be extinct but they had the mission to evacuate civilians. These men came to accomplish their work, they became heroes erected as guardian angels of the Big Apple but at some terrible cost ... Many years later, the survivors still bear the scars of this tragedy, the memory of the brothers in arms they lost, the images of all the pain and of all the bodies lying on the ground and unfortunaly, these heroes are now kind of forgotten despite the fact that they saved many lives. On the contrary fictional heroes are often remembered.
In conclusion, two heroes can be completely different. Maybe some people will only recognize the heroes of everyday life, maybe others won’t consider them as true heroes and will prefer to dream about fictitious heroes. To my mind, realistic heroes have a greater merit because they actually risk their life for us but I must admitt legendary heroes allowed us to travel in a different time or a fantasy world. In each case, these persons are admired not for who they are but mostly for what they have accomplished.
