Respectively/help
Message from clint01 posted on 10-07-2014 at 12:24:54 (D | E | F)
Hello,

If William is 178. John is 180 centimeters. Steve is 195 centimeters.
We may join the sentences above using respectively:
William, John and Steve is (are) 178, 180 and 195 centimeters, respectively.
Suppose William, John and Steve is 80, 95 and 110 kilograms, respectively.
Is there any way to tell how tall and heavy they are (simultaneously) in a single sentence using respectively?

Hello,

There are 4 different ways you can tell how tall and heavy they are in a single sentence using “respectively”:

1. William, John and Steve are 170 cm, 180 cm and 195 cm tall; having weights 80kg, 95kg and 110 kg, respectively.
2. William, John and Steve weighing 80kg, 95kg and 110 kg are 170 cm, 180 cm and 195 cm tall, respectively.
3. William, John and Steve, whose heights are 170 cm, 180 cm and 195 cm, weigh 80kg, 95kg and 110 kg, respectively.
4. William is 170cm tall and weighs 80kg, John is 180cm tall and weighs 85kg, and Steve is 195cm tall and weighs 110kg, respectively.

Thank you rkj,
but don't you think that 'respectively' is not that necessary in sentence number four.

Hello,

You are right clint, in sentence 4 we needn't write the word' respectively'.

Hello,

I know it is not necessary in sentence number four. I agree with Lucile too. It seems absurd but it is often used in scientific and statics writing in this manner. I am giving you an example what I read a few months ago in Business & Economics publication called

“Proceedings of the Sixth Meeting of the Task Force on Shielding Aspects of Accelerators, Targets and Irradiation Facilities”.

Editor: - OECD Nuclear Energy Agency

The sentence is like this- “ADAM represents the reference adult man weighing 70 kg and being 170 cm tall, and EVA the woman weighing 60 kg and being 160 cm tall, respectively."

Hello rkjs58,
Thank you for that clarification

Hello rkjs58,
In the example you mentioned, I think 'respectively' was used because ADAM and EVA were considered as a representative of a group that the scientist wanted to study the effect of something on their behavior,... or wanted to compare them statistically. I mean when they say, ADAM, it means a group of people weighing 70 kg and being 170 cm tall. That's why they used 'REFERENCE adult man'.
For example if you want to compare cars, you might say, 'class A having horse power of 180 and drag coefficient of 0.3, class B having HP of 180 and drag coefficient of 0.4, and class C having HP of 180 and drag coefficient of 0.5, respectively'.
Classifying cars according to their horse power and drag coefficient may sound strange It is not my turf.
What do you think here4u? Your absence makes the heart grow fonder
