Bonjour,
Je ne sais pas si la phrase que j'ai écrite quand j'étais encore en licence d'anglais est juste.
Do you know since when has the internal combustion engine been in existence?
L'ordre des mots me gêne mais je ne sais pas pourquoi.
Est-ce que quelqu'un pourrait m'expliquer la règle avec since when?
Avec how long ça a l'air demarcher fonctionner:
How long has the internal combustion engine been in existence?

Bonjour,
Tout d'abord je ne suis pas sûre que cette structure 'been in existence' soit très idiomatique mais l'anglais n'est pas ma langue maternelle alors je n'en mettrais pas ma main à couper.
Ensuite since when est un calque de "depuis quand" et ça ne va pas. Prenez exemple sur ces phrases :
"How long have you been here ?" "I've been here since Monday"

I suppose you could say "Since when has..." or "Do you know since when the internal combustion engine has...", but these sentences seem awkward. Better to ask "How long...?" The answer can still begin with "since" as well as "for".

votre question est citée au style indirect, je ne mettrais donc pas d'inversion:

I don't know how long the internal combustion engine has been in existence. idem
Since when et how long existent, certains privilégient how long pour la durée et since when pour une date, un point de départ:
How long has he been working for that company ?
He has been working for that company for ten years.
Since when has he been working for that company ?
He has been working for that company since 2003.
