On or at/help

On or at/help

Hello everybody!
Please, help me because I'm confused whether I should use the preposition 'on' or 'at' in this sentence:
My brother likes our family gathering (at weekends)or (on weekends)?

Would you explain me why?
For example I can say I work on Sundays,isn't it?
So ,if I say I work on weekends,is it false?

Apparently, we can say both, but "at weekends" is British English and "on weekends" is American English
