Past simple/-ed

Hello,

I thought we have to add 'ED' at the end of the verb to express past but I think I was wrong , so please tell me which one is correct and why and please let me know when I should use 'ED'.

- I gived him the gift
- I gave him the gift

Hello,

to give is an irregular verb : to give,gave,given.
gived doesn't exist.
it's up to you....

oh thank you , I get it now
so I use ed for regular verbs only and give is an irregular verb , so we say give/gave/given.
