Agatha Christie's home (aural)
Message de notrepere posté le 11-11-2010 à 23:31:46 (S | E | F)
Hello! I offer the following complementary* exercise to Violet's series on Agatha Christie. The short video is from the BBC website and talks about Agatha Christie's holiday home in Devon, England.

*"two people or things that are complementary are different but together form a useful or attractive combination of skills, qualities or physical features" Oxford

There are two parts:

Part A, indicate the missing words as required.
Part B (optional), aural comprehension. Some parts of the text have been completely
removed (as indicated). You must answer a series of questions based on your comprehension of the missing text.

P.S. Sorry that the exercise is so long. The video is longer than I would have normally chosen but seemed so apropos and interesting that I decided to use it anyway. I can extend the correction date for anyone who is struggling to finish it on time.

Me voici!

Hello everyone! I see that you've all done really well. Listening is a very good exercise, isn't it? OK, here is the correction. I've decided to present it in prose so you can see how it might appear in written form. If you find this too confusing, let me know.

Part A.

Now, fans of the author Dame Agatha Christie have a rare treat in store from the end of this month. Her holiday home "Greenway" in Devon where she spent her summers entertaining guests with readings from her thrillers is opening to the public for the first time after a multi-million pound restoration by the National Trust. John Kay is at the house, near Dartmouth. Hello John.

Hi, Sophie. Yeah, there are best-selling authors and then there's Agatha Christie. Her books have sold in their hundreds of millions around the world over the last few decades and this is where she used to come kind of to get away from it all. And now we can come have a look around it as well. Apparently they're just getting ready for the first paying visitors at the weekend. But the National Trust who own it now say they're particularly proud of it and what they're hoping is that it's exactly as it was when the Grand Dame of crime fiction herself lived here.

Her piano retuned, her home restored: Agatha Christie's favourite place is coming back to life. Until now, the contents of her Greenway mansion have been a family secret but now the mystery can finally be revealed.

It was here in her drawing room that Agatha Christie would gather together her house guests on a summer's evening, sit them down and read out loud from her latest whodunnit.

"She did it, really, partly to entertain us, but partly to try out her story on an actual audience."

Greenway is now owned by the National Trust who've spent more than five million pounds restoring it to its 1950's glory. On display: souvenirs from Agatha Christie's world travels, and on the walls the story of a little girl who grew up to become queen of crime fiction. Greenway was the inspiration for some of her best-selling murder mysteries. You almost expect Poirot to walk in at any moment.

"She had quite a lot of furs, but what is really interesting is this Kimono.
A bit of "Orient Express" here?
Oriental express, I think."

This is where Christie came to escape the pressures of literary life.

"It's a magical place and it's set away from the rest of the world so you have no sense of people other than boats drifting up and down."

In the library, there's no hidden murder weapon -- instead, an entire collection of Christie's first editions. Greenway is proof that sometimes crime does pay.

Not bad, is it? Now this place is called Greenway and it's quite an appropriate name because it's so private there's hardly any road access so the National Trust is suggesting "green" ways of getting here, especially coming by river taxi along the River Dart.

Part B.

1. Why did her house guests read her stories out loud? d. Answers b and c

2. According to the interview, Agatha Christie owned quite a lot of: c. Furs

3. What was the surprising piece of clothing in her closet? b. A kimono

See you on the next one !

Hello notrepere

Wonderful . However, I am just wondering... the phrasal verb to get away in these two sentences of yours:

get away: (phrasal verb)
to go somewhere to have a holiday, often because you need to rest (Cambridge)
I just need to get away for a few days.
We've decided to go to Scotland to get away from it all.

The meaning of getting away in the second one is different from the first one, don't you see?

Have a good night

Hello May,

I just need to get away for a few days.
We've decided to go to Scotland to get away from it all.

I think the difference comes from the prepositions.
to get away for = partir pour.(.un certain temps).
to get away from = s'évader de tout ça, s'échapper de tout ça.
don't you think so?

Hello dolfine56,

I would say "Dolfine56, you and I are about to have the same idea, I think"

Happy sunday

Hello NP,

I'm so disappointed, because when I wanted to do the exercise, the link didn't work... What a pity. :o(

Hello hanifa, I'm not sure why the link didn't work for you. Sorry.
Hello May, to "get away" means "to leave or escape". I used these examples because one of them matched the exercise perfectly: to get away from it all.

The same thing as Hanifa,
the link didn't work,
"not available in your area",

Hello everybody,

You also Irish? I don't understand why. We missed a good exercice, maybe the next time, at least I hope.

Hanifa

Yes, I've noticed that some content is only available to certain people. There are many things that I can't view in the U.S. I don't know how they determine this and it's impossible for me to know when something isn't widely available. Sorry!
