Possessive adjective

Hello,
I'd like to know how to translate "son" ou "sa" when the sex of the character is unknown.
Each candidate has to show ... grit
or
The writer shouldn't be hard on .... son.

Hello,
It's very common to use "their" with "each", altough it's not a real plural.
With the word "writer" you can write "his/her" and say "his or her".

the question was about the possessives:
Each candidate has to show his or her grit, as Brettdallen said,
"Each candidate has to show their grit" can be seen too.
Everybody gave their opinion = all the people taking part in the debate gave their opinion.
As for "the writer" I would imagine it is the narrator's responsibility to know if it's a he or a she:
otherwise: the writer shouldn't be too hard on his or her son, but it sounds bizarre.
It reminds me of another lesson:
The football-team is playing well (as a team, as a group)
The football-team are having a shower (each player is washing, that makes a plural group)
a man is helping the police with their investigations ...

are you calling Lucile "Lucie" because she enlightened you ?
(lux is light in latin, lucia.... lux cilia,...) or because of the Beatles ? "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" (I doubt a teacher's pension would enable her to afford that many diamonds ....) même si elle collectionne les perles que nous faisons tous à un moment ou un autre sur le site...
