Hello everybody
I'm studying the relative clauses and the relative pronouns
and I am not sure if I can replace whom/ which by whose in these cases:
The writer, the first of whose books had been a bestseller, was a miner in a deep mine.
"The first of whose book" dont le premier livre. Whose possession OK?
selon le cours n°14455 traduire le dont français, à la fin on nous donne des équivalences:
- dont certains some of whom/which
- dont la plupart most of whom/which
- dont aucun none of whom/which
- dont le premier the first of whom/which.
- dont deux/trois... Two/three of whom/which.
- dont + superlatif superlative + of whom/which.
Donc, quand il y a POSSESSION est ce qu'on peut remplacer whom/ which par whose?
She had three sons, the eldest of whom was studying English.
She had three sons, the eldest of whose children was studying English
The eldest of whom ou the eldest of whose children ?
I hope I am clear ?
Thank you in advance

Bonjour.
Il ne faut pas partir du français et penser que dont implique automatiquement un rapport de possession. Dont peut signifier parmi lesquels.
J’ai acheté six œufs, dont trois étaient fêlés. I bought six eggs three of which were cracked. I have many customers, most of whom are satisfied.
Dans votre phrase, il serait plus léger de dire : The writer, whose first book had bien à success...
The eldest of whom est le choix correct.parmi lesquels et non pas auquel appartient.
