Hello,
The word "although" is a subordinating conjunction, so it has to be followed by a clause (subject + verb + complement if any). The word "in spite of" is a preposition, so it has to be followed by just a noun (or a pronoun, but it is a noun in the present case).
I do not see any meaning difference in the two sentences you gave, but let's wait for native speakers' replies.
I hope this helps.
Best regards

Hello.
The word although has a neutral sense, neither good nor bad.
'In spite of' has the sense of something considered to have a negative or harmful influence, yet it does not affect the second thing in a negative way.
I hope that helps. Sherry
