suffix

I noticed that to mark the belonging to a group the suffix -ling is currently used ( like in halflings or younglings).
May someone tell me where this suffix comes from.
Thanks

Hello ashkana,
here's what I found:
suffix -ling
1) one connected with or resembling (ex: hatchling)
2) small one (ex: youngling, princeling, spiderling)
N.B: 'halfling' is another nam for 'hobbit' (JRR Tolkien). They look like humans but they're smaller (in fact, half their size...hence "halfling"

Have a nice day!
